1. Dinosaur World Live
The UK tour of Dinosaur World Live will pass through Colchester this summer and is a must-see for kids aged three and above. Stunning puppetry is used to bring life-like dinosaurs to the big stage and guests can meet all their favourite prehistoric creatures including the gigantic T-Rex.
2. Colchester Castle Park
Colchester Castle Park is at the heart of Colchester town centre. It’s a great place for a runaround or a picnic and is home to many historic sites such as the Roman Wall, Victorian Bandstand and Colchester Castle itself.
3. Hollytrees Museum
Family-friendly activities in Colchester include the Hollytrees Museum which can be found in the grounds of Castle Park. Set in a Georgian townhouse, you’ll find toys and clothes from the past few centuries as well as clocks, watches and art.
4. Natural History Museum
When it comes to places to visit in Colchester, don’t miss the Natural History Museum. Free to enter and great fun for the whole family, the museum is home to a wide array of exhibits and interactive displays. 5. St Botolph’s Priory
If you love history, St Botolph’s Priory is definitely worth a visit. Founded around 1100, St Botolph’s was one of the first Augustinian priories in England and is an impressive example of early Norman architecture. It’s a great place for a picnic or a spot of photography.
6. Head to the Roman Circus Centre
A site for the only known Roman circus in Britain was identified in 2005. The structure was monumental and would have seated up to 8,000 spectators who would have also gathered to watch sports including chariot racing. The Roman circus site and visitor centre include outdoor and indoor displays and a cafe.
7. Take a Walk at the Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park
Burn off some energy at the Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park, a SSSI (Site Special Scientific Interest) attraction spanning 200 acres. Home to 200 species of birds, 27 species of dragonflies and damselflies, and 24 species of butterflies, this is a top spot for nature lovers.
8. Visit Lexden Springs Nature Reserve
Another exciting place to visit in Colchester is the Lexden Springs Local Nature Reserve known locally as The Loop. With wildflowers and plenty of wildlife, this is a popular walking and cycling route home to a pond formed from a natural spring.
