We might not have dinosaurs with their scaly tails and huge teeth roaming Planet Earth anymore but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy your very own dinosaur hunt and learn more about the prehistoric age as you go. There are many ways you can go about this, so keep reading for some wonderful ideas your little ones are sure to love.
Write Clues for a Garden Adventure
Family things to do in the UK don’t have to be expensive. In fact, you can have great fun in your own back garden. For a dinosaur hunt that gets little brains working, why not hide an array of plastic dinosaurs in various spots around the garden? A stegosaurus munching grass behind a tree could work as could a T-Rex lurking in a plant pot. Next, write clues as to where the dinosaurs are and ask your kids to read them before rushing out to find each Jurassic beast. Those who find all dinosaurs successfully using the clue for help could be rewarded with some dinosaur-shaped cookies or even jelly with dinosaur-shaped sweets inside.
You could add an educational spin to this by asking your child to research three facts about each of the dinosaurs they find in the garden. Create and decorate your own dino fact file and spend the whole day learning about these fascinating creatures.
Make Your Own Props
For a dinosaur hunt with an interactive twist, be sure to get the whole family involved. Make dinosaur models out of cardboard, pipe cleaners, lolly pop sticks, coloured paper and more, being sure to add googly eyes for effect. Hide these around the garden for someone else to find. You could also make trees from craft paper, watering holes from papier mache and arrange stepping stones to make your hunt even more realistic.
Another great arts and crafts activity is to make your own dinosaur hand puppets with friends. Decorate old socks using craft supplies before slipping them onto your hand and hiding in an outside space such as a park. Nominate one person to come and find you all. This is a bit like hide and seek, just with dinosaur puppets and an added dash of creativity.
