SOCIAL DISTANCING FOR KIDS: EXPLAINED

The world has been a little different lately because of the coronavirus pandemic – often called Covid-19. The virus is so infectious that, in order to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible, we have been asked to stay away from people who currently live outside of our household ‘bubbles’. This is called ‘social distancing.’ But why can’t we see our friends or relatives like we used to? And are there things we can do to make these strange days more fun? Let’s find out.

Why is Social Distancing Important?

Covid-19 is highly contagious, meaning it spreads easily from person to person. So, to stop the virus from making more and more people sick, it’s really important that we avoid close contact with each other. The World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends keeping at least 1 metre between yourself and others. But it’s wise to stay 2 metres apart where possible, such as in shops and supermarkets.

The reason you must keep a distance is because if a person coughs or sneezes, small water droplets fly through the air. These can contain the virus. And if you’re too close you might breathe in the droplets and the virus, which could make you sick. Social distancing and washing your hands often also helps prevent you from coming into contact with contaminated items and surfaces.

How Can I Keep My Distance?

There are many things you can do to make social distancing easier. These include:

  • - Forming a Covid-19 social bubble. This might sound confusing, but it simply means only having contact with a small number of people and keeping a safe distance from everyone else. Your family could be your social bubble. Or perhaps a few friends and relatives that you see a lot. Of course, the smaller your bubble, the better, as it will be less risky.
  •
  • - Avoiding crowded places. Only go to crowded places such as shops, supermarkets and beaches (on sunny days) if absolutely necessary as it can be more difficult to keep a safe distance from people in busy environments. If you are going somewhere a little crowded, be sure to wear a mask and wash your hands frequently.
