Stomp, chomp, roar! Meet the coolest dinosaurs ever

For around 200 years, humans have been obsessed with dinosaurs. Why? Because they were some of the most fascinating animals ever to have walked the earth. Whether they were gentle giants grazing on vegetation or fearsome predators with 30cm long teeth, they have captured our imagination ever since the first fossils were described in 1824-25. But which were the coolest dinosaurs? It’s a hotly debated topic, but we’ve come up with some great contenders.

The Tyrant King - T. rex

Many would argue that T. rex is the coolest dinosaur of them all. It’s certainly one of the most popular. This terrifying predator had about 60 razor-sharp teeth and skull-crushing bite strength, and could run at speeds of up to 15mph. It may be awe-inspiring, but you wouldn’t have wanted to be its lunch. Chomp!

The swimmer - Spinosaurus

Spinosaurus is a super-cool creature because it was one of the only semi-aquatic dinosaurs. It was absolutely huge - bigger even than T. rex - with spines measuring almost two metres tall, but could move with agility in the water by using its tail as a paddle. One researcher described it as ‘half duck, half crocodile’.

The three-horned beast - Triceratops

We often think of T. rex as being able to eat whatever it liked, but it met its match in Triceratops. This massive plant eater could spear a T. rex with its one-metre long horns and had a frill of solid bone that protected its neck from the Tyrant Lizard’s jaws.

The armoured dinosaur - Ankylosaurus

When it comes to armour, Ankylosaurus is surely the coolest creature out there. This plant-eater presented a challenge for predators thanks to all the protective gear it had built in. From thick bony plates embedded into its skin to long spikes and a club-like tail, this is one dinosaur you wouldn’t want to mess with.

The smartypants - Troodon

Strength went a long way in the prehistoric world, but so did brains. Troodon may have been one of the smaller predators, but it was among the smartest dinosaurs and had excellent eyesight, hearing and smell. That made it a strategic hunter, possibly even collaborating with other Troodons to hunt in packs.

The gentle giant - Patagotitan

Patagotitan was one of the largest dinosaurs ever to walk the earth - and as such there was very little for it to fear. This gentle plant-eater was about 37.5 metres long from nose to tail tip, and stood around eight metres tall - about the height of a house. Even the biggest predators looked small compared to this incredible creature.
